Indiana Jones 5 Will Arrive Sans Shia LaBeouf

The Indiana Jones franchise has been loved by many for generations now. Steven Spielberg not only influenced the film industry, but unwittingly inspired one of the most popular modern game series in Uncharted. It is undeniably Harrison Ford's most iconic role, second only to Han Solo.  Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade stand together as a pillar in cinema trilogy history and...wait, what? There was a fourth? No, that can't be right. Now I remember. It was called Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and it was panned by fans and critics alike.

Now I know this can be painful for some, but talking through past trauma can help in the healing process. Apparently, the creative team behind the next installment agree. Writer David Koepp recently informed Entertainment Weekly that Shia LeBeouf's character Mutt would not be seen anytime soon.

“Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say," he states. “And the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film.”

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull saw LeBeouf take on the role of Indy's long-lost son and even teased the possibility that he would take up the mantle of his father. Koepp's comments, however, seem to kill any chance of that. Shia's absence isn't too much of a shock. LaBeouf publicly stated that he felt they "dropped the ball on the legacy that people loved and cherished." It seems that he and Spielberg are no longer on good terms. That being said, the scribe did seem rather pleased with their progress on the script so far.

“I know we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting The Post …. If the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his next film.”

The verdict: Hopefully Indiana Jones 5 will be a continuation worthy of the fans who are so invested. If not, at least Harrison Ford has Han Solo...wait, what? He died in The Force Awakens. No, that can't be right.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to come at us on July 20, 2020.
